President's Message

I hope everyone is healthy and has been creating some woodcarvings to show us when we finally get to return.
Our first event has been cancelled at Matthew’s Farmers Market on May 16th from 8AM to 12PM. This event will be repeated on October 10 from 8AM-12PM latter in the year. Hopefully by October we will be able to participate in this event. We will keep you updated.
We have decided to cancel the July picnic because of the COVID-19 virus and not knowing what is going to happen in these next few months as our state is opening up. We know big gatherings will be the last type of events to be safe to open so that is why we are cancelling the picnic. We will just have to make the Christmas Holiday Party extra special this year. We hope everything in the world will have calmed down by then so we can look forward to spending a nice evening enjoying dinner together at that time.
We plan on opening up carving at the end of May at the church location by holding the club outside with proper social distancing and wearing masks. Bring your own lawn chair and come and enjoy the company of your carving friends from 3PM-7PM on Tuesdays. The Woodcraft location still will not be open to hold our meetings because we do not see a way to practice proper social distancing at that location.
Wahoo provided us with a great opportunity to keep our members interested in woodcarving. A online Zoom meeting is being offered every Saturday at 3PM it is free. Wahoo said it was extremely informative and interesting. It has been set up by Larry Green and Blake Lunsford through the International Association of Wood Carvers. The Zoom ID is 475 383 9961. New topics will be discussed every week and this Saturday Helvie Knives is going to talk about his knives. The first two meetings had woodcarving and painting techniques. Check this Zoom meeting out and tune in every Saturday at 3PM for other interesting woodcarving information.
Everything is on track for Wild Acres which will be held August 17th-23rd this year. We will keep you updated on any changes to this event as it become available. I really hope this retreat goes forward because it is a wonderful week of woodcarving that Rod Gatlin arranges for us every year.
On September 5th -7th Matthew’s Alive Festival will be held and we need everyone to participate to support our club for this fun filled weekend. The hours are September 5th 11AM-7:30PM, September 6th 12PM-7:30PM, and September7th 9AM-4PM. Come carve for the day or half a day all weekend long. This is a tremendous opportunity for our club because we receive money that sponsors our social events for our club. We love to carver so it is a winning weekend of doing lots of woodcarving and promoting our show in February. The February Showcase is scheduled for February 19th-23rd this year.
Autumn Treasures Festival in Waxhaw is one more way we reach out to the public to promote our club and hobby. It is held the second weekend in October. The hours are Saturday 10AM-6PM and Sunday 12PM-4PM in Waxhaw. Local crafters, entertainment, along with great BBQ make this event one you do not want to miss. The Charlotte Woodcarving Club will have a tent and we will need club members to participate.
We hope to see some of you at Carmel Presbyterian Church carving outside starting Tuesday June 2nd. I leave you with a quote to celebrate Mother’s Day.
All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.
